Camp Trinity on the Bar 717 Ranch is a residential summer camp for kids ages 8-16 in Northern California. For more than 90 years, the Bar 717 Ranch has welcomed children to 450 acres in the beautiful mountains of Trinity County to experience nature, form deep friendships, and have big fun. Life on the Ranch is all about community and freedom. At camp, kids are free to follow their interests to the activities that excite them. Home-cooked meals, cozy sleeping platforms, and campfires under the stars are just a few of the things that make camp special. Join for campfires, horseback riding, and other fun activities on the ranch!

Bar 717 Ranch

Kent Collard grew up spending summers and holidays at the ranch with his grandparents, Grover and Erma Gates. He worked on the ranch crew and as the Ranch Manager before becoming Director. Kent has a BA in Architecture from UC Berkeley, and an MA in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Gretchen Collard was a camper, a counselor, the CILT Director, and Staff Director. She has a BA in Spanish Literature from UC Davis, and an MA in Social Work from UCLA. Gretchen has over 17 years of experience working with children and families as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Laura first came to camp with her parents when she was 4 years old… and hasn’t missed a summer since! She was a camper for years, worked as a counselor and CILT Director during college, and moved into the Assistant Director position in 1990. Laura accepted the additional position of Office Manager in 1998 and moved to the ranch to live and work full-time. Laura earned a BS in Human Development and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from UC Davis.

Emma first came to the Bar 717 Ranch as a nine-year-old camper. After two weeks of barely leaving the barn except to eat or sleep, she was hooked on camp. Emma joined the counseling staff in 2005, and worked as a counselor for four summers. She graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, CT with degrees in Public Policy & Law and Hispanic Studies, and holds a Masters in Public Administration from New York University. After spending several years working in the Bay Area nonprofit and education sectors, Emma is thrilled to be back at the ranch.

Nick and Jean have been staff at the Bar 717 Ranch since 2007. After working as counselors, resource staff, and tree house builders for many years, they moved to the ranch full-time in 2017 and to become the program directors. When they aren’t making sure that Arts and Crafts has enough glitter or helping Emma train the counselors they like to play board games and hang out with their dog Watson.

Hiya, I’m Cricket! I’m super psyched to be back this summer for my second year as a counselor after previously being a camper for several years. I’m finishing up my sophomore year at George Washington University out in Washington DC where I’m studying international affairs, Arabic, and GIS (super cool mapping systems). Outside of my coursework, I spend my time hiking with GW’s outdoor club, playing for the club water polo team, and reading in my hammock. I can’t wait to be back in the Trinity Alps for another summer of climbing, silk screening, dancing, outposting, and more. See you there!

Hi! I can’t wait to return to camp for my second summer. I’m from Berkeley, California but have been living all over the place for the last few years. Most recently I’ve been attending the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, focusing on environmental studies and psychology. I’ve always loved being in the outdoors, making it a priority to explore the nature around wherever I am living. Some of my favorite things to do include traveling, rock climbing, backpacking, reading, cooking, and working with horses, all of which I am excited to do at camp. I can’t wait for another summer at the ranch and can’t wait to meet everyone!

Hi Everyone! My name is Emma and I am so excited to be joining you all this summer. I am from Marin County, California and am lucky enough to have grown up as a part of the 717 community. I am currently finishing up my second year at The University of Virginia where I am studying public policy and am on the Women’s Rowing Team. When I am not at school or practice you can find me spending time outside, in my kitchen trying out new recipes (currently working on perfect pancakes), reading, or playing with my camera. I am looking forward to a summer of swimming, singing, and dancing. See you there!

Hi, I’m Grayson! I am originally from Redding California but am currently living in San Diego as a second year at SDSU studying Finance. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to come back to the ranch as a counselor! I have always loved activities like hiking, backpacking and being outside in general and can’t wait to be back in a fully outdoors environment. All my life I have enjoyed music and loved playing the mandolin, violin, piano and ukulele in my spare time! I can not wait to spend my summer at the Bar 717 Ranch and am looking forward to meeting you all!

Hey everyone, I’m Ari, and I’m super stoked to meet y’all at camp soon! I was a camper at 717 for quite a few years, and it’s always been a dream of mine to return to the ranch as a counselor. I’m originally from Sacramento, CA, but I currently study Sociology and International & Public Affairs at Brown. I’m also on the varsity equestrian team here. When I’m not in class or riding, I can often be found doing arts & crafts, working on my (very rudimentary) photography skills, or traveling around the Northeast and exploring new cities. I also absolutely love being outdoors – whether I’m swimming in rivers, taking picnics, or hiking – and I can’t wait to join y’all in making fun outdoor memories this summer! Hi there! My name is Atilio which means “your favorite counselor” #joke, actually means the grandparents favorite. I graduated from Industrial Design in December 2019 and I’m very passionate about my major because it always helps me to create a ton of ideas that are in my head and also help others to make their ideas real. I love experiencing with different materials and forms to create beautiful products, currently I live in Monterrey Mexico, and we are surrounded by mountains so I enjoy going on hikes with my dog Tesla to explore them, unfortunately Tesla will not be able to come to the camp but she sends her best wishes. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hey 717! My name is Ryan, and I am so excited to return to the ranch this summer as a first-time counselor! I grew up in the Bay Area going to 717 and I can’t wait to return to my “home away from home.” I’m a ’25 (first-year student) at Dartmouth, where I spend a ton of time outside with the Dartmouth Outings Club, am on the lightweight rowing team, and am studying Engineering and Environmental Studies. Before starting college this past fall, I took a gap year to do a NOLS semester, worked for a charter school nonprofit, read lots of books, and went on other outdoors trips. I can’t wait to be under the apple trees with you all!

Hi everyone! My name is Melia, and I’m so excited to meet all of you this summer. I was born and raised at camp, and I am looking forward to returning for my first summer in the counselor role, working to foster the love of the outdoors and the 717 community that I was lucky enough to grow up around. I am currently attending Occidental College down in Los Angeles and finishing up my first year. I haven’t declared a major yet, but I am interested in studying geology, education, and urban and environmental policy. You can find me playing club ultimate frisbee, reading, camping, or hiking in my free time. I am so excited to be joining the camp community once again this summer, for swimming, dancing, and friendship bracelet making. See you under the apple trees!
